A whole post on reading! Yep, it's kind of a big deal for me because I have read so little over the last many years. Must be related to having all my kids in school now, hmmmmm. I do have so many other things I should be doing but I am indulging myself at the present. I even gave myself an early birthday gift and it's name is Kindle! So keep reading, if you care!
There has been no TV watching except for one hour on Thursday night in my house! [Last night was an extreme disappointment btw.] For the first time ever I am not even watching Survivor! What's even more ridiculous is that I have not cancelled cable yet! Ok, I do watch/listen to the first part of the Today Show but I'm not sure if that counts as TV watching. What do we do after the kids get tucked into bed? Well, read of course!
I finished "Love in the time of Cholera" by Gabriel García Márquez, and even ventured as far as to Netflix the movie that I didn't know existed until I was halfway through the book. If you'll allow me the old trusty cliche, the book was better. Of course it was! Has there ever been a movie that came out better than the book? For me, even if the movie is bad, I still like to see it come to life with some directors vision and I didn't hate it. It was just all squeezed and sensationalized and smushed up.
After that book, I read "Little Bee" by Chris Cleave. I was better than just ok for me, but just barely. It was fun to read in the alternating narrative voice by chapter fashion and the story was good, I guess the main character bugged me too much. I just discovered that it too will be a movie someday soon with Nicole Kidman in the lead part. I also read "The Madman" by Kahlil Gibran, which is a poetic short story collection and I though it was absolutely mesmerizing and beautiful. Exactly what I expected it to be. You can find that one and read it for free very quickly online [it's very short] because of the copyright expiration.
So now I am halfway through "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett after waiting for it for over two months from the library. It has that alternating narrative voice as well and so far I'm really enjoying this one. It's a southern civil rights/slice of life story about white people and their maids [of course] and I love reading that 1st person southern drawl. Especially the character Aibileen, who I am convinced speaks just as if my own dear Granny was speaking to me from years ago. She constantly uses "Law" [as in Lord have mercy] and it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling every time I see it as the first word in her sentences.
That's it for now. I added my Shelfari to the blog sidebar [I think it's cute], I hope to load it up eventually. I'm not going to bother for now with adding books I read years ago, half of them I can't remember and they're probably not worth mentioning anyway.
The only book I read from my Kindle was "The Madman", it was short, and free. I don't expect to read too many current books that I would have to pay for on it any time soon because there is so much free content that will keep me busy for a long time.
OoOO do you like the kindle? I've been debating on the kindle or the nook or just wait for the ipad haha. I have been reading as well. If you need any recommendations, I would say any book by Mitch Albom, I love all his books, love you!
