Found Today: Two Gems.

One. On living in the moment:

One day some people came to the master
and asked: How can you be happy
in a world of such impermanence,
where you cannot protect your loved ones
from harm, illness or death?
The master held up a glass and said:
Someone gave me this glass;
It holds my water admirably
and it glistens in the sunlight.
I touch it and it rings!
One day the wind
may blow it off the shelf,
or my elbow
may knock it from the table.
I know this glass is already broken,
so I enjoy it -- incredibly.

Two. On growing our children:

Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are?

We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move.

You may become a Shakespeare, a Michaelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel?

You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.

  1. Hey Mel,

Love those! I've had that Casals passage hanging in my office for almost 10 years & I rarely run across it anywhere.

I've thoroughly enjoyed your December posts. Children really make Christmas time special. Thanks for sharing all the pics & videos. Oh, and yeah, Tony's a rockstar!! Way cool running updates.

    Love you, Happy New Year!
